In 1996, the Christchurch City Council created the New Zealand Cup and Show Week umbrella brand to coordinate the growing number of national interest races and local iconic events happening in Christchurch over this period.
The development of these events into the New Zealand Cup and Show Week festival created the potential for the festival to become a national icon that would bring significant economic benefits to Christchurch and reinforce local pride in the community.
Over subsequent years the festival has grown significantly and is now established as the highlight of the New Zealand racing calendar and a social occasion that attracts more than 125,000 people, including 45,000 visitors to the city.
